Psychiatry

Atakent Health Group’s Psychiatry Department provides expert mental health services at our hospitals, offering support and treatment for a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and psychological disorders.

Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental and emotional disturbances that affect individuals’ thoughts, behaviors, and adaptation to their environment.

Modern psychiatry integrates disciplines such as neurobiology, genetics, pharmacology, and advanced imaging techniques, while also drawing from psychology, anthropology, and sociology.

The history of psychiatry spans back to ancient times. Hippocrates was among the first to propose that mental illnesses arise from natural causes rather than supernatural forces. In ancient Pergamon, the Aesclepion temple served as a healing center where patients received therapeutic treatments, including mud baths and rest therapy.

During the Middle Ages, mental illness was misunderstood, and patients often faced inhumane treatment. However, with the Enlightenment, humane psychiatric care began to emerge, including the development of mental health institutions and structured treatments.

In Turkish history, the approach to mental health was comparatively compassionate. One of the earliest known psychiatric hospitals was founded during the Ottoman era in Istanbul, with notable institutions later established in Edirne and Manisa. Modern psychiatry in Turkey was pioneered by Mazhar Osman.

After completing six years of medical education and five years of specialization training, physicians who pass the national specialty exam are eligible to practice as psychiatrists.
